​ Sacred Heart of Jesus Church

 

  Known as the “Polish Church,” the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church is a beautiful building with a history tied to Polish immigration in Ponta Grossa. 

  The lot, located between Balduíno Taques and Vicente Machado streets, which previously housed the Church of St. John, was donated by the city government to Father Rymar (the first diocesan priest to arrive in Ponta Grossa) on January 11, 1897. In mid-1896, it became a rectory and was not established as a parish solely due to its proximity to the Rosary Parish.   Thus, the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church was built in 1898, and everything was conducted in Polish, except for the Masses celebrated in Latin.

However, by 1928, the church had become too small for the number of Poles in the municipality, so the current church, built in the Gothic style, was constructed on this same site with great difficulty; its exterior could not be completed because donations from the Polish community had declined due to nationalization. On the 60th anniversary of the priestly ordination of Bishop Antônio Mazzarotto, the first bishop of the Diocese of Ponta Grossa, construction of the church was completed on October 22, 1974.

It is the only church in the city that offers perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and on Sundays, Mass is celebrated in Polish. Currently, no sacraments are administered at the church, which is open from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and has a small shop that sells religious items.
