Rosary Church
In 1869, a plot of land was donated to the Brotherhood of the Rosary for the construction of the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary. The church was built in a short time. It was a simple and modest church, in the Jesuit colonial style, made of stucco (a mixture of plaster, glue, and water), with a wooden floor, rough benches, and two towers. Later, the walls were rebuilt using stone and lime to support the interior walls and other parts of the building. Maintained by the Brotherhood of the Rosary, this chapel was frequently attended by enslaved people.
By the end of the 19th century, the church had deteriorated significantly due to the passage of time and rain seeping through the roof; the walls were cracked, and the towers were in danger of collapsing. Since no repairs had been made by the early 20th century, the left tower collapsed, leaving only one tower standing for a long time.
In the 1940s, it was decided to demolish the old church, and the current one was built on the same site, completed in January 1942. The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary was elevated to parish status on January 31, 1942. Inaugurated in 1951, this striking building was constructed in the Romanesque style.
This new building is constructed of masonry, with imposing towers at the front. In 1961, the walls of the High Altar Chapel were painted by Américo and Eva Makle, who were Hungarian artists. Depicted on the wall behind the altar are the three mysteries of the Rosary: the Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious Mysteries.
Outside the main chapel, there are also two side altars facing the front, as well as altars along the side walls. Also on the side walls, above the altars, are Byzantine mosaic panels. The Stations of the Cross are also depicted in 12 Byzantine mosaic medallions.
